Coaching is for authors who are dreaming, scheming, and partway through the gruelling process of writing their first draft. As your writing coach, I’ll be your cheerleader, sounding board, and problem solver. During our one-on-one video or phone sessions, I’ll offer a listening ear and the best lessons I’ve learned over many years of studying narrative, tailored to the specific challenges you’re facing.
I currently offer two coaching packages.
Fiction and Memoir Coaching Packages
In Coaching Package A, you get
A detailed book development questionnaire to guide our reflections and discussions about your project
Six 60-minute conversations over three or six months, depending on preference and availability
A follow-up email after each call, with resource recommendations, exercise prompts, encouraging words, and/or helpful ideas to try
Cost of Coaching Package A: $1,500 CAD, plus applicable taxes
In Coaching Package B, you get
Everything in Coaching Package A
Informal written feedback on your synopsis, book map, outline, writing exercises, or other short planning documents (up to 1,000 words/session submitted in advance)
Cost of Coaching Package B: $2,400 CAD, plus applicable taxes
The goal of both these coaching packages is to equip you with practical solutions and renewed energy for your project, to help you move towards your goals, and to remind you that, as isolating as the writing process can be, you’re not alone.
Would Coaching Be a Good Fit for You?
Coaching may be a good fit if you’re looking for one or more of these things:
Clarity on your goals and vision for your book (or series)
A brainstorming partner who will listen to your ideas and help you refine them and generate more
A safe and encouraging environment for practising writing techniques
Pep talks and strategies for overcoming obstacles standing between you and a completed first draft
Guidance as you make difficult decisions about foundational aspects of your book (such as which points of view will best serve your story)
Tips for creating and making the most of planning tools (synopses, outlines, book maps, beat sheets, character sketches, series bibles)
These coaching packages are designed for writers who are planning or in the process of writing the first draft of their novel or memoir. Why do they start with six sessions? Because experimentation, skill-building, and progress—whatever it looks like for you—take time. What if six sessions isn’t enough to reach your goals? For those who have completed a coaching or editing package, additional single 90-minute sessions are available (contact me for more details).
Writing coaching, as I define it, isn’t these things:
An assessment or editing of the manuscript itself, either in part or in full. If you’ve already completed your first draft, woo-hoo! You’ve reached an exciting milestone. You may be ready for one of my editing services.
Therapy. There is often an emotional component to coaching, but I am trained in literature, not psychology or social work. Please entrust your mental health to qualified experts.
